LOCAL MEP ISSUES A REMINDER TO SOUTH WEST HOLIDAYMAKERS12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 15th Jul 2009
Holidaymakers from the South West have been reminded that they will need an up to date European Health Insurance Card if they are travelling abroad this summer. Despite over 30 million Brits owning the cards, every year many incur unnecessary medical expenses because they have not packed one. Local Euro-MP Graham Watson has also warned constituents that two-thirds of the cards issued in the UK expired in March of this year, and people should check them before they travel. Mr Watson said; "British citizens have the same rights to medical care as local residents, which is in itself testament to the value of European cooperation. "Travellers are advised to check their cards and apply for a new one if necessary. They can be obtained free of charge, by visiting www.ehic.org.uk or telephoning 0845 606 2030. Graham also took the opportunity to encourage holidaymakers to make adequate travel insurance arrangements this year. He said; "Comprehensive cover for the whole family can be obtained quickly and relatively cheaply on the internet, and can save a lot of hassle and expense. "After all, there is no point in holidays being needlessly ruined this summer." Ends.
