Liberal Democrats: Tackling Climate Change

Pollution and Climate change don't respect national borders, so the Liberal Democrats believe we need to work across national borders at all levels to tackle these problems. We have constantly fought for strong EU measures to tackle climate change. We will soon be campaigning for an energy independent EU that both allows us to not have to rely on unreliable countries such as Russia, and to invest in renewable energies that are better for the environment than the oil and gas Russia provide. If Britain is isolated, as the Conservatives and UKIP want, then tackling these major world issues in an organised and cooperative manner will become much more difficult. We will have little say over regulations on air and water quality and be at the mercy of energy producing countries to dictate to us our future.

The Liberal Democrats are committed to;

  • A Green Road to Recovery: The Liberal Democrats want to create new jobs in green industries, money in people's pockets from saving energy and a transport network we can all be proud of. We will encourage other European Countries to put in place similar investments to ensure we all emerge from recession stronger and greener than before.

  • Tackling Dangerous Climate Change: Liberal Democrats will work with other European countries to tackle climate change and protect the environment. Liberal Democrats want Europe to work with the United States new administration to create an ambitious international treaty to tackle climate change.

  • Creating Independent & Renewable Energy: The Liberal Democrats will work to stop a repeat of Russian threats to switch off our energy. We want to invest in green renewable energy of our own, to stop our reliance on dirty fossil fuels from Russia.
